Emily Carr

Emily has been Headteacher of Bishopton PRU since September 2017, and before that she has worked as a leader in a number of other PRUs across the North East.
Before becoming Headteacher, Emily had a number of leadership roles: Deputy Head; Assistant Head; Director of Curriculum and Learning. She has also worked as a school lead for Eco Schools; Healthy Schools and has been a subject leader of ICT, Science, English and SEAL.
Before entering the world of PRUs, Emily worked as a primary teacher, in particular as a year 6 teacher. Through working as a year 6 teacher, she developed a range of strategies to ensure children made strong progress and achieved and exceeded their targets. Emily’s experience at both primary and secondary, has given her an insight in what is successful at all key stages and a strong understanding of transition between key stages. She is keen to share this experience.
Due to her experience of working with disengaged and disaffected learners, and since becoming Headteacher at Bishopton, she has worked hard to look at ways to support children to develop academically, socially and emotionally, through developing a therapeutic intervention system as well as a curriculum which has been designed to engage vulnerable learners.
Emily is forward thinking and outward facing and is keen to support schools in developing at a strategic level, using current research and through building networks at a local and national level. She has set up a local network of PRU leaders, which has now also branched out to include some PRU subject networks. She also sits on the National PRUsAP Executive Committee. 
Passionate about people and big on relationships, Emily believes that relationships are key and works hard to develop strong relationships with pupils and parents, as well as agencies and other partners who can support in achieving the best outcomes for the children.

Rachel Campbell

• Head teacher
• BA Joint Hons English and History
• PGCE and QTS in Secondary English Studies

Rachel has worked in various roles in Education since 2002. From the first time Rachel walked into a Pupil Referral Unit, she knew she wanted to support young people who were on the fringe of Education and society.
After completing her joint honours degree in English and History, and PGCE in Secondary English Studies, Rachel embarked on a career as a Secondary English teacher. Rachel’s mainstream teaching experience and success with disengaged students who displayed challenging behaviour, lead her to take on additional responsibility as a Year Manager, developing her knowledge of what pupils and their families were experiencing beyond the school gates. When the opportunity of a position at a local PRU arose, Rachel went for it!
Rachel went from leading English across the PRU and raising teaching and learning expectations among students and staff, to securing her first senior leadership position as an Assistant Head teacher. After supporting the PRU through two Ofsted Inspections and progressing into the role of Designated Safeguarding Lead, and Specialist Leader of Education, Rachel applied for an internal position as Deputy Head teacher. Succeeding in this gave Rachel more confidence to support others in the profession to embark on their Leadership journey. Rachel continues to research staff well-being and development and has developed a personalised CPD programme to allow staff to engage with their personal development and growth.
Rachel is an advocate for learning for all, and passionate about developing others to realise their potential. Through her enthusiasm and passion she has been invited to speak publicly about a number of topics such as: Curriculum Planning; Challenging Behaviour; Student Mental Health and Well Being; Inspiring Early Career Teachers to get into the profession. Rachel continues to actively engage with Women Ed, and is an advocate for Women Leading in Education.
After a tumultuous 2020, where Rachel had her first taste of Headship whilst Acting up for the Summer term, 2021 is set to be an exciting year as she embarks on Stockton’s first Co-Headship with Emily Carr.

Claire Thompson

• Assistant Head teacher and SENDCo

After qualifying as a Primary teacher Claire chose to gain employment working with children and young people with a variety of additional needs. Throughout the past 12 years, Claire has served as a teacher in a range of Pupil Referral Units covering a variety of year groups from KS1 to KS4. Claire’s experience and drive has led her to her current role as Assistant Head Teacher and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Co-ordinator at Bishopton PRU. Claire has said she is deeply passionate about working with young people and believe in a culture of ‘no limits’ and excellence, underpinned by the highest expectations.

Within Claire’s current role she has monitored the impact of teaching and learning through looking at data, teacher feedback, observations and set up intervention for individual pupils. Through Claire’s approachable manner and deep understanding of teacher development, she has also supported staff and trainee teachers in relation to specific Special Educational Needs and Disabilities in order to support pupils in class.

As part of Claire’s SENDCo role, she continues to liaise with other professionals and supported other schools to ensure that pupils are catered for when they either return to their school or transfer to a new school. Due to the success of Claire’s training she has also provided support to schools in different authority with staff development and planning for pupils with SEND. Feedback from other Head teachers and professional whom Claire has worked with has been outstand with one Head teacher stating, ‘In our recent OFSTED inspection the support that Claire has provided the school was recognised as a real strength because of the impact her work has had on individual pupils and on the school’s practice as a whole’

As well as Claire’s current role of Assistant Head Teacher and SENDCo, her other roles have included Pupil Premium Champion, Designated Teacher and a member of the Safeguarding Team. Claire’s passion and ‘unflappable’ nature shines through all she does and is a welcomed feature of the all-female senior leadership team, at Bishopton.

Ally Tokat

• Teacher with TLR for Personal Development

• PGCE and QTS in Art, Craft and Design 

After graduating from her BA Hons Degree, Ally began work as teaching assistant to gain an insight into a career in education. Instantly Ally knew that supporting children and young people through education was her calling. After honing her nurturing skills and ability to support teaching and learning in the classroom, Ally pursued further studied and was successful in graduating for a second time in a PGCE in Art, Craft and Design which lead to QTS in the Secondary sector.
Throughout Ally’s career she has gained experience of working with children and young people across a wide variety of settings. After spending time in Beverly School, teaching children and young people who have an autistic spectrum condition, Ally’s head was turned by the opportunity to lead on the Art and Design provision at Bishopton Pupil Referral Unit. Upon taking up the role, Ally was quick to develop the offer for pupils and through her knowledge and expertise was able to support students in securing some of the best GCSE results the PRU had seen in Art and Photography.  Ally’s passion for Art along with her nurturing attitude towards pupils meant even the hardest to reach students clambered to be in her lessons.
Leaders at Bishopton spotted Ally’s potential and quickly invested in her. Ally completed the NPQML programme and took the PRU’s hallmarks of education and turned them into the successful CASTLE programme which underpins all that the school does. It is this experience which make Ally the outstanding teacher and leader she is today.

Jen Wilson

• Teacher with TLR for Behaviour and Attitudes 
• BA (hons) Open (English, Philosophy and Religious Studies)
• PGCE and QTS in Secondary English

Jen has worked with children, young people, and families in a range of roles since 2008. She started her work with young people as a Youth and Community Worker, gaining experience in the third sector as well as public sector youth services. Through this, Jen has supported learners across the key stages, detached youth work, open access youth work, as well as supporting community groups to run their own provision to sustainably meet the needs of the community. 
It was as a youth worker that Jen had her first taste of alternative provision, when she worked with a senior youth worker who used forest school methods to support young people’s holistic development. At this point, Jen realised that some students fall through the gaps in the education system, with lasting consequences for their future opportunities. After working as a Teaching Assistant delivering English intervention, Jen trained as a teacher at Durham University, where she qualified in Secondary English. 
Since qualifying as a teacher, Jen has held a range of leadership roles including Digital Literacy Leader, English Intervention Co-ordinator, KS2/3 English Lead, and Lead Teacher for Accelerated Reader and Literacy. One of Jen’s passions is transition between Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 as she firmly believes that supporting young people through these hinge points in life is crucial to nurture their success on an academic, social, and emotional level. Her work in transition outreach and leading whole school literacy formed the basis of her progression to Specialist Leader of Education with Campus Stockton Teaching Alliance.
Throughout her time in education, Jen has demonstrated her passion for promoting staff development and professional learning, from mentoring new teachers through to delivering CPD within school and beyond. She thrives on sharing good practice and ‘magpie-ing’ from others so that students can reach their potential. She wholeheartedly believes that pedagogy and attitudes for learning are intertwined, and that to promote positive attitudes to learning, pedagogy is key.
In January 2020 Jen started at Bishopton PRU as KS3 Nurture Teacher and SLT lead for Behaviour and Attitudes. She is excited to be part of a strong and supportive leadership team within a school that is very much like a family.

Claire Fletcher

• School Business Manager

• BTEC ND in Business and Finance

Claire’s career started in the private sector. Before joining the world of Education Claire’s background was based in Finance and Accounting, working in various settings with a range of clients. Although Claire enjoyed this line of work she knew that she wanted to contribute to public sector funding and support those who were supporting others.  It was Claire’s kind nature that initially led her into the world of education and from this her knowledge of the way in which a school financial system works grew.

Claire joined the PRU in September 2019 after deciding she wanted to challenge herself with a change of school setting and a more complex way of school budgeting!  Prior to joining Bishopton, Claire had worked in a similar role at a well-established Stockton Primary School for over ten years.

Claire’s ‘can-do’ attitude along with her head for number made her the perfect School Business Manager for Bishopton PRU, who were facing challenges in securing the correct level of funding for their ever expanding, highly complex cohort of children and young people. Luckily, Claire was very much up for the challenge and in a relatively short space of time, Claire developed clear systems and developed strong links with outside services who could support the PRU’s financial needs.

Claire enjoys the ever changing landscape of the Education sector and relishes the new challenges that this brings. Claire is forever wanting to develop her own skills and expertise and is currently embarking on understanding employment law within education so that she can continue to support the sector to achieve and grow.
