Physical Education

Physical Education @ Bishopton

At Bishopton we are passionate about fostering a culture of self-care for staff and pupils. In order to promote an enjoyment of physical activity and understanding of keeping healthy we offer Physical Education as a key part of the curriculum to every student in all year groups. Our lessons are centred upon promoting enjoyment in physical activity and providing the opportunity to experience performance, coaching, leadership and officiating. We challenge our students to continually progress, ensuring a sense of achievement. PE builds confidence, self-esteem and social skills through individual and team activities.

Year 10 and 11 students have the option to study PE as a BTEC qualification challenging students to achieve their full potential.

Students’ Physical Education journey is explained through the ‘PE and BTEC Sports Pathway at Bishopton’. This visually demonstrates what a pupil from Y7-Y11 will experience in this subject.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8, 9)

In Key Stage 3, physical activity is promoted throughout the curriculum in our Core Physical Education curriculum, and our Castle Outdoor Physical Education programme. We offer a variety of team and individual sports where we aim to develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities. The curriculum allows pupils to be physically active for a sustained period and aims to offer engagement in competitive sports.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10, 11)

In Key Stage 4 Core Physical Education, pupils tackle complex and demanding physical activities. Similar to Key Stage 3, students at Key Stage 4 are involved in a range of sports and activities that develop personal fitness and promote an active, healthy lifestyle.

At Key Stage 4, we offer students an ‘Options’ programme which allows students to develop their knowledge and understanding of the Physical Education curriculum further, in addition to their Core Physical Education offer. The BTEC and NCFE options offers students an introduction into Sports Science modules. For example: Anatomy, Physiology, Fitness and Health.

Exams and Qualifications

We offer the following courses:

  • BTEC level 1 award and/or certificate in Sports and Active Leisure
  • Level 1/2 Technical Award in Health and Fitness.

Impact of our offer

Through our Physical Education offer, students develop life- long skills, like resilience, independence and leadership skills, through a variety of physical activities. They also gain an understanding of what is required to ensure there are also looking after their wellbeing. Learning through physical activity but transferring it to academy and everyday life. We create a highly motivated culture where students develop employability skills that they transfer to their everyday life and also support their academic progress. We discuss courses in Further Education (college), Higher Education (university) and professional work opportunities in the Health and Fitness Industry and support these discussions through visits to local providers and work experience opportunities.
