At Bishopton we strongly believe that PSHE is an important part of our curriculum. We have tailored the PSHE Associations’ ‘Programme of Study’ to suit our pupils, school and community; giving careful consideration to our school ethos and aims and our pupils’ needs.
Personal, Social and Health Education focuses on developing skills which are transferable to other subjects across the curriculum and prepare students for the diversity of the world in which we live. It is also paramount that we explore in depth a range of key issues that are pertinent and relevant to the lives of children and young people, so that they be informed and equipped to make decisions that will have a positive impact on their lives.
This develops pupils’ knowledge and understanding of their future Choices. Exploring employability skills and provides pupils with the opportunity to research the world of further education, employment and enterprise by having face to face contact with external visitors from industry and further education. They will be given guidance on how to produce CV’s complete application forms as well as how to conduct themselves in interview.
Through this topic we study the different types of relationships, features and implications of positive and negative relationships. We then explore sexual relationships in an age appropriate way with learning focused on consent, sexual health, body image, media, and social pressures.
Through this topic we develop the pupils knowledge and understanding of the skills they need to develop to make informed decisions regarding their own personal health and well-being. We also explore a range of other key concepts around stereotyping, beliefs, cultures and what leads to extremism/right wing ideologies.
Throughout the year our pupils follow the PSHE Associations’ three core themes: Health and Wellbeing; Relationships; and Living in the Wider World. We believe these topics to be essential in developing the skills our learners need to be successful, well rounded, rights respecting global citizens and we match the curriculum to ensure our learners are able to be work and life ready. Learning skills that develop our students for their future is fundamental, we develop not only their academic skills but their emotional.
The curriculum is engaging and varied using case studies and research that is relevant to our pupils and our school setting. We have amended the schemes of work at both KS3 and KS4 to include the new Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education’ to follow statutory guidelines. This ensures that the pupils are very well-equipped for the
next stage of their education or employment.
It also identifies links to British Values, and SMSC and is taught in such a way as to reflect the overall aims, values, and ethos of the school.
The programme of study continues on from KS3 with a deeper and detailed look into the three core themes, Health and Wellbeing, Relationships, and Living in the Wider World.
So that pupils can gain knowledge, skills and an understanding they need to lead confident, healthy and independent lives to become informed, active and positive members of a diverse multicultural society. Pupils will take part in a wide range of activities and experiences contributing to the life of the school, the local community.
In Year 11, pupils will gain a deeper understanding of what effort, revision and resilience looks like in relation to examinations. There is also a real focus on ensuring pupils get the correct support for post-16 options.
The intention is that the pupils will learn about being confident in addressing the challenges of effective learning and making a full and active contribution to society but will have opportunities to revisit their learning about Health and wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the wider world in order to build on and deepen prior knowledge and understanding.
Learning skills that develop our students for their future is fundamental, we develop not only their academic skills but their emotional. We discuss courses in Further Education and develop students employability skills.
We approach topics with care and sensitivity as we know a lot of issues may have affected the young people we support. We ensure that any support is put in place that may be needed for our learners.
These guides are to help parents know more about these subjects and are related to the guidance Relationships education, relationships and sex education (RSE) and health education.

We look to engage with outside agencies where we believe it will enrich the learning of our students and welcome offers of potential projects that would support our learners in developing their skills/knowledge/understanding of any topic that falls under the PSHE umbrella.
